TOOLS OF THE TRADE: MAYA LOWE BATKI

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

The beauty industry is always evolving and shifting and the art of hair cutting and styling is no different.  There is a movement to bring a slower, more intention filled practice to our daily grooming routines, and remember and honor some of these ancient ways of self care. Organic salon owner Maya Lowe Batki is dedicated to bringing this care to her practice. Maya brings a touch of ritual to her cutting and styling using crystal combs in her practice and organic styling products, taking your experience a tier above your average salon appointment.  Below she talks tools and the new way of beauty.

What is your craft?
Hair cutting
.
What are your 5 most used tools of your trade?
6 1/2 inch shears, comb, clips, cape, hair diffuser.
.
Do you have a tool that’s unique, an heirloom, or holds special significance for you?
My Chrysocolla comb by Crownworks. I’m loving finding intentional and magical hair tools.
.
If you could talk tools with another artist, maker, or crafts person, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

The person whose brain I’d most love to pick is Andi Scarbrough of Crownworks. She is creating a whole new way to connect with, and help clients heal using crystal comb magic. I’m fascinated by this new and ancient way to work in the beauty industry and with my clients.
