SUMMER STYLE
NECKLACE LAYERING
One of the questions I get asked most often is how to layer necklaces so they feel effortless rather than tangled or crowded. While there are no hard rules, there are a few things I keep in mind when building a stack.
Summer is one of my favorite times to layer necklaces. Open necklines, sun-kissed skin, and easy dressing create the perfect backdrop for telling your story through the pieces you wear every day.
YOUR ANCHOR PIECE
Start with your "anchor piece" (the necklace you never take off)
and build around it.
CHAIN LENGTH
In general, I find that allowing at least 4 inches between chains creates enough space for each piece to breathe. A 16" chain paired with a 20" chain is one of my favorite combinations. An 20" chain paired with a 24" chain also works beautifully.
PENDANTS
When layering pendants, I usually place the larger or heavier pendant on the longer chain. This helps the eye travel naturally through the stack and prevents the necklaces from competing with one another.
Charm necklaces layer best when given their own space rather than crowded by another pendant at the same length.
TEXTURES
Mixing textures can also create interest. Try pairing a simple chain with a charm necklace, a strand of pearls, or a sculptural pendant. Contrasting elements often create the most personal and collected feeling.
MIXING METALS
Mixing metals can look intentional and modern if repeated elsewhere (rings, earrings, bracelet).
Every neck is different. A combination that layers beautifully on one person may sit completely differently on another.
Layering is the opportunity to create a look that feels like YOU.
